As many other countries of the world united state of America is also facing water scarcity problem. Water supply is decreasing day by day in many states of USA. It has been mentioned in a report that southern California will be provided with 15% less water in upcoming years. There are many small states where people are struggling to get drinking water. It is not a problem with people who do not have water now, but slowly it is becoming a problem for those too who are getting enough water currently. There are many rivers which are getting run dry so in future water shortage is going to attack more cities and states.
California Governor Jerry Brown’s ordered cities to decrease the amount of water for their daily use by 25%. At least one region of every 40 of 50 states is having or will have a water storage issue in very near future.
Water demand is increasing every year and with the amount of available water is decreasing. Due to less rain deficiency in available water can happen more than once a year, which means that water crisis are going to affect many states of USA sooner. The government is making emergency plans to fight with possible climate changes and drought conditions.
In coastal areas sea level is rising and spoiling fresh water with salt water. Salt water is not hygienic for people and it cannot be used in any way without any desalination treatment.
To resolve all those problems and to provide clean and hygienic water to the population of the United States of America desalination plants is being constructed and their construction has increased from 2000 to 2010 by half. 324 plants were built from 1971 and 117 were built from 2000 to 2010 which includes plants which can produce 25000 gallons of potable water per day.
Water desalination is increasing notably as the demand of fresh water in increasing. Improved technology is helping very much to fight with water shortage. Authorities are saying that desalination will keep growing but many people think that in coming future it will become hard even with desalination to resolve water issue, but for the time being it is playing a big role.
A new plant was constructed in Carlsbad, which has a capacity of producing 50 million gallons of water per day and will be provided to San Diego County. The official name of this plant is Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant. The idea of this plant was given in 1993 but environmentalists were against its construction because of different reasons. The construction started in 2012, it was originally planned to start in 2016 but due to drought it was started in late 2015. Many companies were involved in its construction. It was built in more than 14 years.
There are other big desalination plants built in different states of America.
Different desalination plants are working in Texas for groundwater as well as seawater. EI Paso treats groundwater and produces 27,500,000 us gallons of fresh water for daily use.
Florida becomes first state for using desalination treatment on a large scale in 1977. In 2012 it has 33 brackish and 2 seawater desalinations working properly and more 7 were under construction.
